COAST STORM, CLARE ISLAND
Oil on board, 47 1/4" x 23 3/4" (120 x 60cm), signed; signed, inscribed and dated 1965 verso.

Exhibited: 'Tony O'Malley: A Personal Choice by Vera Pain', Crawford Gallery, Cork, July-Oct 1994 Cat no. 12.

The muted tones of this painting, with its subtle variations of smoky greys and earth tones, are characteristic of this period in O'Malley's work. Its subject matter, however, makes it particularly interesting as it draws on the artist's memory of a place that had strong associations for him. Although the artist was born in Kilkenny, his father came from Clare Island, off the Mayo coast, with many generations buried in the old Cistercian Abbey there. O'Malley visited the island many times with his father, as early as 1927, continuing to go there throughout his life and inspiring what Vera Ryan referred to as 'memory and identity paintings.'

The artist has transformed the landscape of Clare Island into an abstract composition which works in its own right, while never totally letting go of the stark atmosphere and grey light of an oncoming storm that was the original impetus for the painting. For O'Malley,  the places he inhabits both in his day-to-day life and in his memory, and how they make him feel, were important. In Clare Island Coast Storm he gives us a sense of frosty light, solitude and, more importantly, solidity and permanence.

O'Malley often painted on salvaged boards, embracing the bruises. Here we can see how he has scraped and incised the surface, adding texture, giving character. He attacked this painting with a rugged directness that perfectly embodies the rocky raw character of this remote island.
