Lot 50 - WINTER TREES by Paul Henry Lot 50 Paul Henry WINTER TREES
Estimate: €70,000 - €100,000
Paul Henry RHA, 1877-1958
WINTER TREES (c.1922-23)
Oil on board, 13" x 15 3/4" (33 x 40cm), signed; with another painting by the artist verso.

Provenance: Private Collection, Limerick; Irish Art Auction, deVeres, 29/11/2006 lot 87; Private Collection.

This picture, with the matted branches of the trees seen at close quarters, is similar to a number of others by Henry- The Fairy Thorn (1917), Wind-blown Trees (1918-19), Spring in Wicklow (1922-3), Spring in Wicklow (c.1926-8), A Farm in County Down (1934-5), The Stony Fields of Kerry (1934-9) and The Pear Tree (1939-44) all come to mind-and the artist evidently delighted in capturing the animation of the architectural forms of the leafless trees. In April 1930 a Boston newspaper (unidentified cutting) thought the later Spring in Wicklow composition, then on show at Grace Horne's Galleries, looked 'as some minor strain of Celtic music might sound', and a year later, in March 1931, the New York Literary Digest commented that 'those who know Ireland will recognize the veracity of [Henry's] "Spring in Wicklow"-the bare blue mountains … the windy sky … the interlacing branches … form a beautiful pattern,' comments that could equally apply to this work. The absence of any indication of the setting or of modelling or detailing in the mountain mass behind bear witness to the continued Post-Impressionist influence on Henry's compositional technique. Dated 1922-3 on stylistic grounds and on the evidence of the signature.

This picture is no.1320 in Dr S.B Kennedy's ongoing catalogue on Paul Henry

IF A BID IS RECEIVED WITHIN THE FINAL 45 SECONDS OF THE COUNTDOWN THE CLOCK WILL RESET TO 60 SECONDS.

At any point you can leave a maximum bid, representing the highest price you are prepared to pay for a particular lot. Bidding only advances when there is competition from a rival bidder.
