Within this small and carefully formed painting, Paul Henry seems drawn towards creating a composition from three horizontal bands, dissected by the trio of mountain peaks that overlap at its centre. The painterly edges of the furthermost slope, and the patches of light that strike its triangular form, soften the solidity of its mass beneath a dancing sky.

Generous applications of paint hint of three-dimensionality, creating a light-reflecting surface over much of the panel. Although working, here, to intimate dimensions that invite close inspection, the location itself is seen at some remove, from a high angle. Thus the focus seems to be the relationship between the warm, yet receding violets and blues of the mountains and sky and the ochres and umbers of the foreground, the two sensitively mediated by an edge-to-edge strip of still water.

It is a scene from the shores of Killary Bay, possibly close to where the artist stayed for a time at Aasleagh, near Leenane. A pair of cottages sit in the bottom section of the painting, alongside huddles of stacked turf that promise respite from the worst excesses of weather. These match the tone of the windows and doors, linking the inside with the outside.

Invariably, in Henry's paintings, buildings dwarfed by natural formations appear, nonetheless, timeless and stalwart. They testify to the resilience of the people who lived, worked and socialised within. Although, by now, the human element of earlier works has been eliminated - as part of a Modernist drive towards greater abstraction - their unseen presence remains powerfully implicit.

    At any point you can leave a maximum bid, representing the highest price you are prepared to pay for a particular lot. Bidding only advances when there is competition from a rival bidder. In that case the system bids on your behalf, only up to the maximum if required. All bids are relayed to you be email, along with notification if you have been outbid. 
     
    All maximum bids are confidential and not disclosed. The system will endeavor to purchase the lot for you for the least price. Bids are subject to buyer’s premium of 25% (incl vat), with no additional charges.

    In the event of a tied bid, the preference will be given to the bid submitted first. The second bidder will receive immediate notification of being outbid.
