Joan Coen's paintings have featured in solo and group exhibitions across the country and? they form part of public and private collections .

Her paintings of the human head arise from an interior access point and are a product of a fundamental belief in the act of painting and in? its capacity to express the unconscious.

She considers the human head as a receptacle of spirit which? holds? mind, memory and imagination and she? is inspired by? Joseph Conrad who wrote that the human mind contains all the past, the present and? the future .This she finds to be both? a wonderful and a terrifying phenomenon. She describes her process of painting as 'allowing' the paint to reveal the unconscious and avoids the imposition of a concept such as resemblance. She draws on the fluid nature of paint, on its sculptural potential, and on the emotive power of colour to create works of art that are as layered as human evolution. Her paintings from her 'Head Series' present a human? experience of being in the world. They express human struggle and the qualities of? resilience , hope and courage.

As Siobhan Ni Shithigh she has published four collections of poetry, and a collection of essays with Coisceim. Her story 'An Bho Riabhach' (An G?m,2004) was awarded the Eilis Dillon award as a work of literature for children.
