Hector McDonnell grew up on the estate of Glenarm, Co. Antrim. He  studied painting in both Munich and Vienna and is regarded by many as one of the finest figurative artists working in Ireland today. Best known for his observations of daily life, he captures the mundane with a unique quality. Mc Donnell has a large following in Germany and in 1979 he was the winner of The Darmstadler Kunstpreis. He held a retrospective exhibition there in 1981, a further retrospective was held in the Ulster Museum, Belfast in 2003. The Belfast Telegraph at the time described Hector 'as one of Irelands finest living artists'.

I have visited my dear friend Marina many times over the years and always found things in her house, that epitomised her life, and that of her growing family, that delighted me so much that I was impelled to paint them. In particular I have painted scenes in her kitchen again and again. This, my most recent, sat as a sketch in my studio for a couple of years, as other projects prevented me from tackling it. Finally, restricted to my house by covid, and hearing that Marina was severely ill in hospital I threw myself at the task. Marina's recovery made it an even more pleasurable undertaking, and I look forward now to many more visits in the future, and, let us hope, many more paintings too!
