Hughie O'Donoghue

Born in Manchester in 1953, O'Donoghue is now based in Kilkenny, Ireland. He studied MA Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, University of London in 1982.

O'Donoghue's artwork is consumed by the subject of memory and loss, both personal and universal. Intertwined with the larger contexts of historical moments resulting in this loss and consequent memory is a personal connection; his fathers experience in World War II or his mothers ancestors who suffered in poverty in Mayo.

At the center of his practice is the human form, haunted by psychological elements. When commissioned to paint a series of artworks around the theme of the Passion of Christ - he chose instead to focus on the theme of collective, rather than individual suffering.

O'Donoghue's practice is part and parcel to his process. Initially he used photographs as reference points in his work, while now he stages these photographs in order to give his work a haunted impression. As a layer inserted like a membrane between layers of paint with the result that in some places it will be visible and in others entirely submerged, his objective is that when the work is complete there wont be any kind of jump between the photograph and the image.

O'Donoghue's aims to consider the human experience.
