WINTER KNOT
Oil on canvas, 58" x 97" (147 x 246cm), signed and dated 1982 verso.
Provenance: Hendriks Gallery, Dublin (label verso)
It took Barrie Cooke three years to complete the triptych Yggdrasil (1983), which consists of panels of twisting vines, transposing his Borneo rainforest experience to the light and open landscape of Kilkenny. The title related to the giant World Ash Tree of Nordic and Germanic mythology linking heaven, earth and the underworld, and the work was named in hindsight. Root structures yield to the emblematic knot shape in the following series, including Winter Knot. Unlike the endless knot of Tibetan Buddhism, many of Cookes intricate weaving of coloured and topological shapes are left open ended and in constant flux. They seem to represent metaphysical rather than merely physical conundrums and have possible links to heaven, earth and the underworld. They twist and coil like snakes, giant worms or even darkly toned auroras in some unknown underlying structural pattern. The writer Peter Lamborn Wilson (Hakim Bay) views knot symbolism as almost universal: Knots separate but link levels of consciousness that are also levels of being, connecting the world of humans to the world of kami or Tuatha D Danann, the spirits.
Cookes 1983 exhibition at the Hendricks Gallery included a selection of the Knot paintings.
