Paul Henry RHA, Irish, 1877-1958 WESTERN LANDSCAPE (1932-5) Oil on canvas, 16" x 24" (40.6 x 61cm), signed. Literature: Paul Henry, Paintings, Drawings and Illustrations by S. B. Kennedy, cat. no. 800 (p.259). Provenance: Private collection since the 1950s. The mountains in the background are almost certainly the Maumturks viewed south-eastwards from Kylemore Lough, near Letterfrack, Co. Galway. Painted in the period 1932-1935, when the artists palette, like his mood, lightened as his domestic problems - final separation from his first wife, Grace, and financial difficulties - were overcome. The landscape remains supreme, with the panoramic view inviting the viewer in and showing Henry at his most Impressionistic, painting with bravura confidence. The bold impasto strokes that render the reflections on the lake are indicative of an artist by now completely at ease with both his subject and medium.

  • How bidding works
  • In order to bid you need to register a deVeres account. When registered you can leave bids on multiple lots at any stage up until the closing time, whereby the highest bidder wins the lot. Bidding increments are approx. 10%, e.g
    €0 - €49 by €5, €50 - €199 by €10
    €200 - €499 by €20, €500 - €999 by €50
    €1,000 - €1,999 by €100, etc

At any point you can leave a maximum bid, representing the highest price you are prepared to pay for a particular lot. Bidding only advances when there is competition from a rival bidder. In that case the system bids on your behalf, only up to the maximum if required. All bids are relayed to you be email, along with notification if you have been outbid.

If a bid is received in the final minute the clock resets back to two minutes, in order to give other bidders an opportunity to respond.

All maximum bids are confidential and not disclosed. The system will endeavor to purchase the lot for you for the least price. Bids are subject to buyer’s premium of 25% (incl vat), with no additional charges.

For the upcoming auction on December 8th, the lots will commece closing at 6pm. Each will close numerically with 60 seconds between each lot. Should the bidding time be extended on any lot it will also extend the time on the subsequent lots, as they will close sequentially.

In the event of a tied bid, the preference will be given to the bid submitted first. The second bidder will receive immediate notification of being outbid.

Please note we also accept telephone bids. These can be booked through our office, whereby a deVeres member of staff will call you as the lot enters the final few minutes of bidding and relay the current information to you. You will then be given the opportunity to bid. You must be available to take the call as no time extensions can be granted on telephone bids.
