Lot 3
Tony O'Malley
SPANISH PANEL, 1988
Estimate:
€14,000 - €18,000
Tony O'Malley HRHA, 1913-2003
SPANISH PANEL, 1988
Oil on board, 48" x 24" (122 x 61cm), signed; signed, inscribed and dated July 1988 verso. Opus no. 1735.
Provenance: Solomon Gallery, Dublin (label verso); sold these rooms, Irish Art Auction, 22nd Nov 2016, no.37; Private Collection.
From 1988 through 1999 Tony O'Malley spent part of each year in Spain, resulting in the sombre tones of his Irish paintings giving way to a warmer palette. Always sensitive to 'place', O'Malley was enthralled with the brilliant light and warmth of the southern Mediterranean.
In Spanish Panel we can easily see characteristic motifs, like birds, fish, and feathers, appearing under the guise of abstract shapes. The vertical undulating sweep of the painting suggests wind and flowing water with fish appearing and disappearing as they merge with plant-life and overhead reflections. It's a bold composition, dominated by shades of red but set alight by flashes of brilliant green, purple, and blue. There is an internal harmony in O'Malley's work which he achieves by subtle repetition of shapes, like the parallel lines suggesting feathers.
Spanish Panel draws on O'Malley's totality of experience, the seeing plus the feeling. He looks, feels, digests, and then remembers a sensation, using this 'inscape' as the starting point for a visually satisfying abstract composition.
