3, Rossetti Studios, in London was built in 1890 as an art school with a series of individual studios for occupation by artists. Patrick Swift and Nano Reid both attended here. In 1904 The Chelsea Art Club was established here by Sir William Orpen and Augustus John. Swift and Reid clearly were friends. Reid painted a portrait of Swift in 1950. In March of the same year a long essay in praise of Reid by Swift appeared in The Envoy, a literary magazine that Swift was involved with.
The inscription on the back of the painting would suggest the Reid owned the painting at some stage.
