Louis le Brocquy HRHA, 1916-2012 IMAGE OF FEDERICO GARCIA LORCA Watercolour, 9 1/2" x 7 3/4" (24 x 20cm), signed and dated '77 verso. Provenance: Galeria Maeght, Barcelona (label verso). Exhibited: Galeria Maeght October - November 1978, cat no. 30 (with original exhibition catalogue); Galeria Maeght, Barcelona (October 1978); Galerie Kreisler Dos, Madrid (December 1978); Fundacion Rodriguez-Acosta, Granada (May 1979). Cat. text: Claude Esteban, Arqueologia del rostro [Spanish/French]. Commenting on the series le Brocquy noted, 'I am aware that that vision lies far from my own country which gave birth to Yeats and Joyce. Lorca, far away, lending his Iberian temperament and his voice to the cries of his own people, echoing within his "astonished flesh". For me, an Irishman, it was curiously enough the plays of Synge which provided the key to an understanding of Lorca's fierce, lyrical world. Synge, with his ear pressed against the floorboards, passionately noting the marvelous vernacular of the Wicklow people in the room below. It was only quite recently that I was told by Mark Mortimer in Paris that Lorca knew and admired the works of John Millington Synge.'

- How bidding works
In order to bid you need to register a deVeres account. When registered you can leave bids on multiple lots at any stage up until the closing time, whereby the highest bidder wins the lot. Bidding increments are approx. 10%, e.g
€0 - €49 by €5, €50 - €199 by €10
€200 - €499 by €20, €500 - €999 by €50
€1,000 - €1,999 by €100, etc
At any point you can leave a maximum bid, representing the highest price you are prepared to pay for a particular lot. Bidding only advances when there is competition from a rival bidder. In that case the system bids on your behalf, only up to the maximum if required. All bids are relayed to you be email, along with notification if you have been outbid.
If a bid is received in the final minute the clock resets back to two minutes, in order to give other bidders an opportunity to respond.
All maximum bids are confidential and not disclosed. The system will endeavor to purchase the lot for you for the least price. Bids are subject to buyer’s premium of 25% (incl vat), with no additional charges.
For the upcoming auction on December 8th, the lots will commece closing at 6pm. Each will close numerically with 60 seconds between each lot. Should the bidding time be extended on any lot it will also extend the time on the subsequent lots, as they will close sequentially.
In the event of a tied bid, the preference will be given to the bid submitted first. The second bidder will receive immediate notification of being outbid.
Please note we also accept telephone bids. These can be booked through our office, whereby a deVeres member of staff will call you as the lot enters the final few minutes of bidding and relay the current information to you. You will then be given the opportunity to bid. You must be available to take the call as no time extensions can be granted on telephone bids.
