Biography
Cecilia Bullo (IRL/ITA), is a bicultural visual artist based in Dublin working primarily in sculpture and installation. Her practice is research-based and informed by historical, mythological, psychoanalytic and feminist theories, which create a vital conceptual framework for her physical work. Her work has been exhibited widely in Ireland and internationally and is held in many prestigious private and public collections. Recent projects include: Solo show Being haunted by the breezes, now how will you exist?, RHA Gallery, Dublin, IRL, 2023; Leigheas-Liminalis: antidotes for melancholic gestures, The Dock, IRL; Periodical Review 12—Practical Magic, Pallas Projects/Studios, Dublin, IRL; I know why the caged bird sings, WARP, Sint-Niklaas, BE; Material Stories, Galerie Michaela Stock, Vienna, AUT; Biomedia: Illness, Art and Medicine, Museum of Contemporary Art, Queretaro, MX. She is currently an artist in residence at Fire Station Artists' Studios having the FSAS Residential Studio Award. In this work Cecilia Bullo weaves multi-narratives from ancient religious rituals to liminal
spaces and ecofeminist concerns. Persecuted during the Witch Hunts in the Middle Ages for its reputed connection with
witchcraft, as witches were widely believed to use them as familiars and to turn themselves into toads - these fascinating critters, to the artist, are carriers of genetic memory and healing.
Resilient, magical, shapeshifters, survivors, these Natterjack toad based sculptures are based on Ireland's rarest amphibian which is also the most endangered native amphibian species. The title: un crapaud dans la gorge is taken from an Italian expression 'avere un rospo in gola' which translates in - having a toad in the throat - This expression is used in some
cultures to indicate a state of anxiety or malaise due to the inability to express a strong
feeling or to say something that is considered important.
