'The Rain Coat' is a seminal work in Blackshaw's later oeuvre. In the early Eighties the painting of 'John Bell's Council House,' came as a shock to Blackshaw collectors. He had ripped away all the substance to his subject, stripping it back to the bare bones. … Some critics thought he had lost it. More of this was to follow when Basil became ever more given to hinting at his subject rather than adding, consistently taking away from it. To a seasoned critic like Brian Fallon Basil's Ulster Museum exposition in the early 2000s was a culture shock. Brian told me it took him completely by surprise admitting to me a few years later he was wrong and misrepresented Basil. Being the big man he was, he told me should I get an opportunity for him to be corrective he would gladly do so. He graciously revisited Blackshaw's work in an edition of 'The Irish Arts Review.'

'The Rain Coat' is a classic example of Basil showing the 'otherness' of his evolving output. He could easily have painted a smart rain coat but he chose not to do this. With echoes of Cy Twombly he sets grids against grids. The portrayal of the feet takes the biscuit! "Where are you Basil? Help me." The Rain Coat as a garment is what matters. The figure is merely a scaffolding upon which Blackshaw hangs paint.
