NIELS OTTO MOLLER Lot 11 NIELS OTTO MOLLER
Estimate: €2,000 - €4,000
A FINE SET OF EIGHT ROSEWOOD 'MODEL 79' DINING CHAIRS, BY NIELS OTTO MOLLER, FOR JL MOLLER, DANISH 1960s, the railed backs, leather upholstery, bearing makers stamp, comprising two carvers and six single chairs (8)

Niels Otto Moller designed some of Denmark's timeless classics. He completed his apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker in 1939 and then continued on to study at the design academy in Århus, Denmark. In 1944, he founded J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik, which is still manufacturing today.

Taking very much from the Danish tradition of 'Form follows Function', Moller's designs require the craftsman to rely on the materials, form and skill of their own hand. As seen with these chairs the rich rosewood accentuates the elegant curves of his designs.

The golden age of Danish design reigned from the 1940s through to the 1960s with designers such as Niels Moller, Finn Juhl and Arne Jacobsen coming to the fore. Functionalism and simplicity remained at the heart of this aesthetic, working under the slogan "form follows function". In the 21st century there has been a resurgence in the demand for Danish Modern and it is because it is a style that works in traditional and contemporary spaces alike, it has endured because it is design with purpose.
