Lot 12 - WINTER KILCOE, 1993 by William Crozier Lot 12 William Crozier WINTER KILCOE, 1993

William Crozier HRHA, 1930-2011
WINTER KILCOE, 1993
Oil on canvas, 24" x 30" (61 x 76.2cm), signed; signed, inscribed and dated 1993 verso.

Scottish born Bill Crozier first fell in love with West Cork in the 1950s, creating a home and studio in Kilcoe, near Skibbereen, in 1983. The following decade produced some of the most memorable paintings of his career, works that capture the excitement of being surrounded by that powerful landscape. Winter Kilcoe, painted in 1989, has the emotional intensity that we associate with Crozier. He was never interested in a literal description of a scene, which he felt was limited. One can see how in paintings like this one Crozier encapsulates the totality of his experience at a particular fleeting moment—the seeing plus the feeling.

This artist has an immediately recognisable style: bold personal colour and unexpected harmonies; luscious paint that's dragged, swept, daubed and floated on the surface in varied thickness so that the colours underneath are allowed to peek through. Crozier is an artist who understands the sensuous potential of his materials.

Crozier loved music and, whether Mahler or Gershwin, it was constantly in the background when the artist was working. In Winter Kilcoe one can detect the musicality in his work: those strong blue 'chords' are the key, resonating against the painting's gentler horizontal flow. He orchestrated daring colours, making them 'work' against all odds so that the effect is electric.

Paintings like this one draw on the familiar—a Cork landscape that could be reduced to cliche at the drop of a hat. But what you find here is a challenging composition that re-invents traditional forms of landscape. It takes us by surprise, starting from the familiar and making it fresh, exploring that intriguing space between representation and abstraction.
