Lot 35 - THE GYPSY CAMP by Frank McKelvey Lot 35 Frank McKelvey THE GYPSY CAMP
Estimate: €4,000 - €6,000

THE GYPSY CAMP
Oil on canvas, 16" x 20" (40.5 x 50.8cm), signed.

Kennedy (1993) has observed McKelvey's ability to hierarchically arrange his compositions into distinct areas where the foreground is always darkest, with strong colours, containing the principle narrative. This contrasts with neutral and uncomplicated skies. In 'Herding Cattle on the Road', McKelvey prioritises the animals within the scene where they occupy the centre of the composition. Equally in this painting, the two horses are at the heart of the painting graze happily in the field by the road side. Within the artist's works, the sea is often recruited to set a particular mood for the entire and here we witness a livelier ocean than that usually seen in McKelvey with choppy waves and white foam surrounding the islands. The landscape is quite barren with a narrow road incorporated and windswept bushes to the right foreground. This gives an atmosphere of energy and light drama to the entirety. The overall painting has two principle zones, two thirds of the work is occupied by the pale sky, island and sea, while the foreground features the action and the gypsy camp itself. A small group of figures are engaged in a task beside their brown pitched tent, with gypsy barrel caravan alongside.

This subject was of interest to McKelvey and he painted it on a number of occasions. Examples include; 'On the Road to Kilmacrennan (a Gypsy Caravan)' c.1935-36 which is in the collection of Queen's University, Belfast and features a landscape scene with one caravan pulled by a horse and two figures walking in front, followed by another caravan behind that is glimpsed through the trees; 'Gypsy Caravan', a bright canvas with a caravan set up in a field, a woman tending a fire and two horses grazing happily near a river; and 'Gypsy Encampment', a light-filled painting of two travellers sitting on the grass by the riverside with their pitched wagon caravan nearby. In each of these works the evident fascination of the artist in the lives of the travellers is palpable in these charming and harmonious paintings.
