Provenance: Ritchie Hendriks Gallery, Dublin (label verso).
Born in St. Paul Minnesota, Hiler was preoccupied by colour, design and abstraction. Moving to Paris in 1919, Hiler surrounded himself by a circle of artists and writers in the Montparnasse circle including Marcel Duchamp, Ernest Hemingway, Henry Miller and Ezra Pound. Throughout his fifteen year stay in France Hiler supported himself as a jazz musician and piano player for The Jockey Club. On his return to America in the early 1940s Hiler exhibited extensively, establishing the style for which he is best known where he termed Structuralism. One of Hilers final exhibitions was in the Ritchie Hendriks Gallery, Dublin in 1963 where the present works were acquired.
