HERDING CATTLE
Oil on canvas, 16" x 20" (40.5 x 50.8cm), signed.

Dr S. B. Kennedy (1993) emphasised the McKelvey's ability to capture the essential 'character of the Irish landscape'. In his compositions he demonstrated the on-going discernment of how to work a painting to its best effect, combining vigour of application with perceptive restraint enabling him to lay down his brush when a composition was sufficiently completed.

John Hewitt (1977) has written that McKelvey works in a 'Constable-Impressionist mode' and like Constable, McKelvey was adept at capturing the form and homely character of animals in nature. In fact, within his landscapes, animals particularly farm animals; cattle, horses, sheep, ducks and hens, were afforded equal attention to detail as human figures. The artist is aware of the best way to lead the viewer into his composition. In this painting, the eye travels up the road that curves into the surrounding trees in the middle distance. The foreground and centre of the painting is afforded the greatest detail and the grass banks against the dry stonewall lends a timeless dimension to the scene. The patchwork fields and calm sea beyond beguile the senses. Like the majority of the artist's landscapes, McKelvey knows when to exercise restraint and it is typical for his skies to be kept simple in treatment, where they fade in colour and tone in a comparable palette to Paul Henry. The trees at the centre of the composition are lush and verdant, lending the entire scene a warm vitality that is pleasing to experience. It is interesting that the woman and cattle walk towards the front of the canvas and this is a device to hold the viewer at bay and ensure they do not become completely lost in the prospect.
