Lot 44 - BETWEEN TWO MINDS by Diana Copperwhite Lot 44 Diana Copperwhite BETWEEN TWO MINDS
Estimate: €6,000 - €9,000
Diana Copperwhite RHA, b.1969
BETWEEN TWO MINDS
Oil on canvas, 47 1/4" x 59" (120 x 150cm), signed and inscribed verso.

Born in Limerick and living in Dublin, Copperwhite studied at the Limerick School of Art, at NCAD and at Winchester School of Art & Design, where she earned an MFA.  In 2007 she won the prestigious 2007 AIB Prize, awarded to an emerging artist poised to make an international breakthrough. Since then, she has exhibited widely both in Ireland, across Europe, and in the USA, her work now included in many important public and private collections.

Copperwhite is interested in how humans constantly process new information so that what is 'real' is not permanently fixed. Two Minds suggests a place where observed reality, memory and fantasy collide. Her subjects, like this one, are identifiable but with an ambiguity that is compelling. The artist draws on science, media images and the internet, but also from her own experiences and personal memories. The paintings have a dream-like quality, with liquid layered surfaces that sing with rich, luminous colour. The artist paints over recognisable images, working and re-working the surface so that objects take on the fluid quality of being remembered rather than frozen in real time. She creates a space where the mind can wander off the 'specific' and embrace the spontaneously felt or imagined.

Two Minds shows a room-like space divided by a screen. On either side we see the same figure, one seemingly in repose, the other possibly engaged on a laptop. However, the subject is deliberately non-specific and can be 'read' in various ways. The painting's title suggests the idea of being 'of two minds', of feeling doubt and indecision. Copperwhite embraces uncertainty: we are encouraged to take an imaginative leap into the unknown, making a personal connection with the subject.   She captures a world that's in a constant state of flux, conveying the transitory nature of reality but one that rings true.

In order to allow rival bidders the opportunity to respond to a late bid the following extensions will apply:
IF A BID IS RECEIVED WITHIN THE FINAL 45 SECONDS OF THE COUNTDOWN THE CLOCK WILL RESET TO 60 SECONDS.

At any point you can leave a maximum bid, representing the highest price you are prepared to pay for a particular lot. Bidding only advances when there is competition from a rival bidder. In that case the system bids on your behalf, only up to the maximum if required. All bids are relayed to you be email, along with notification if you have been outbid.

All maximum bids are confidential and not disclosed. The system will endeavor to purchase the lot for you for the least price. Bids are subject to buyer’s premium of 25% (incl vat), with no additional charges.

In the event of a tied bid, the preference will be given to the bid submitted first. The second bidder will receive immediate notification of being outbid.
